Chamber Music Returns to Ouray

The Ouray County Performing Arts Guild will feature an abridged 2021 chamber music celebration on August 20 and 21 in Ouray at the historic Wright Opera House. Concert pianist Max Levinson will be featured in a solo piano concert Friday evening. Harumi Rhodes on violin and Alice Yoo on cello will join him performing chamber music selections Saturday night.

Levinson has been the Artistic Director for the San Juan Chamber MusicFest for the past 17 years. He has performed widely as a soloist throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Asia, and is known as an intelligent and sensitive artist with fearless technique. He is also an active chamber musician and regularly appears at music festivals all over the world. Levinson is the Chair of the Piano Department at the Boston Conservatory, and is also a faculty member at the New He England Conservatory. Pieces Levinson plans to perform include Beethoven: Sonata in C minor, op. 111, Stravinsky: Three Movements from “Petrushka” and Chopin: Polonaise in A-flat major, op. 53 (“Heroic”).

Saturday night, Levinson will be joined by Harumi Rhodes on violin and Alice Yoo on the cello for a chamber music presentation. The trio plans to play Mendelssohn D minor Trio, Mother and Child by William Grant Still, pieces by Debussy and Schumann and more.

Harumi Rhodes is the second violinist of the internationally-renowned Takács Quartet. Acclaimed by The New York Times as a “deeply expressive violinist”, Rhodes gained recognition as a multi-faceted musician with a distinctive musical voice. She is an Associate Professor of Violin, Artist in Residence and Ralph E. and Barbara Christoffersen Faculty Fellow at the University of Colorado Boulder. Rhodes combines her performing career with a passionate commitment to guiding young instrumentalists, composers and ensembles.

Cellist Alice Yoo has been warmly hailed for her sensitive musicianship, expressive nuance and passionate commitment to teaching. She has performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. Yoo is the co-founder and co-artistic director of the Denver Chamber Music Festival. She is currently on the chamber music faculty at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music.

Tickets for the concerts are $20, $5 for students 18 years and under. We are requesting that concert attendees please wear a mask to the performances in the theater. There will be a reception following the Friday night concert in the Tavern at the Wright, and also a reception following Saturday night’s concert just down the street at the Citizens State Bank in Ouray.
