Small Towns, Big Entertainment

[July 2019 | San Juan Silver Stage] Staff Story.

Check out our Arts & Entertainment Calendar in Section C. As the Western Slope embraces more art, music, and theater, more historic buildings are being restored or converted as venues to showcase some of the great talent we have around our region. In edition to looking at art, you can also hear it and watch it, as well. All of these venues offer music and theater along with gallery space. Many also include educational programs. Best of all, these centers don’t just show and tell, they teach, too. Many offer art, theater, and music lessons for adults and children.

All provide a great place to gather, meet friends, enjoy first-class entertainment, and learn something new. What a treat this is for all of us!

Below, we offer some information about several area art centers. Visit their websites to find out more. For our hometown art centers, we featured the Montrose Center for the Arts in our last issue. Read more about the Sherbino Theater in this one, Section C. And watch for a story on the Wright Opera House in our Fall/Winter issue. Delta’s North Fork Valley has a vibrant creative community. Read a little here, go to their websites and follow them on Facebook to learn more.

Once an old theater, and home to numerous businesses, including an auto repair shop, this beautifully restored building (featured in our last issue) provides a state-of-the-art, black box theater, as well as a gallery and multi-purpose classrooms. Thanks to the stewardship of the Starr family, and musician David Starr who brings outstanding performances to the Center, residents of this tiny town, their neighbors, and guests are able to enjoy great music all year long.

Creamery Art Center, Hotchkiss CO (Gloria Crank)

An art gallery and education center serving the North Fork Valley of Western Colorado, The Creamery is now undergoing a restructuring. The vision of a community space for education and the arts began in 2006, when a formerly vacant and rundown old creamery, built in 1939, was extensively remodeled into a world-class art gallery and education center by Linda Tullis.

The Creamery, which has since become a centerpiece of downtown Hotchkiss, as well as an attraction to visitors from outside the area, has strengthened art appreciation and provided low-cost art classes to the area youth. It has provided gallery space for over 50 local artists and authors to sell their work. The Creamery also supports local agriculture by offering a Saturday Farmers Market during the summer months, welcoming local growers and crafters to sell their products in the outdoor pavilion.
