Quilt Show or Art Show? It’s Both!

ASK ANY MEMBER OF ONE of the three local quilting groups what their common goal is and they will tell you it’s promoting the art of quilting. In centuries past, quilting was a necessity to provide warmth in the form of blankets, clothes, and even armor. Today it is recognized as an art form.

Nowhere will you see this is truer than at the 24th Annual Black Canyon Quilt Show (BCQS). Started in 1996, the show has grown to one of the largest on Colorado’s Western Slope. On display will be intricate works of art that capture the essence of our American history, past and present. This is exemplified in this year’s theme, ‘Liberty, Front Porches, and Lemonade’ and is incorporated in the red, white, and blue quilt that will be raffled. The $1 tickets can be purchased from any member of Columbine Quilters, Friendship Quilters of Western Colorado, or San Juan Quilters.

Each year the proceeds from the raffled quilt and sales from a variety of boutique items are donated to a worthy charity. This year’s recipient is the Montrose chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a worthy organization that provides beds and bedding for children in need.

BCQS is very excited to begin offering classes, workshops, and lectures in coordination with our Quilt Show and throughout the year. Check out our Instructors, and invite your friends to join you. Non-guild members are welcome for a small additional fee or they may join a local guild or the BCQS to save money when interested in participating in multiple events. Visit the BCQS events page to learn more: http://www.blackcanyonquiltshow.com/educ

Vendors from across the country will be on hand all three days, offering free hourly demonstrations on Sunday from noon-3 p.m.

Seeing these quilts up close is sure to give you an appreciation for the time, talent, and energy that goes into each piece, not to mention the money! This nectar for the eyes is one event you will not want to miss.
