Montrose Women’s Club Awards Charities

[May 2019 | San Juan Silver Stage | By Kathryn R. Burke]

The Montrose Woman’s Club (MWC) is a ‘helping’ club. Our mission is to support our members and the greater Montrose community through charitable services and philanthropic activities. We work with law enforcement to provide ‘hug-a-bears’ to children in crisis from a difficult home situation. We collect and donate gifts to residents of nursing homes and care facilities. And we give away money to local 501C3 charitable organizations throughout our community who need help, and don’t get it from large, government grants or donations.

Each year, in May, we give them the money we earn from renting vendor tables during our two annual ffundraisers: a Flea Market the first weekend of April, and a holiday arts and crafts bazaar the first weekend of November. Both events are held at Friendship Hall at the Montrose County Fairgrounds and are completely staffed by our member volunteers.

Last year, one of the recipients was Montrose Center for the Arts, which now has its own building (story, page B-4). This year, one of our 12 awardees is the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans, which in addition to presenting veterans with custom-made canes (story next page), assists veterans with jobs, mentoring, mental health, and housing. Other deserving organizations receiving a cash award are:Christ’s Kitchen, Shepherd’s Hand, Sharing Ministries, Dolphin House, Sleep in Heavenly Peace (which builds beds for kids), Kid’s Aid Montrose (which provides food in backpacks), Montrose Botanical Gardens, Montrose County Historical Society and Museum, MADA (see story page A-19), Save the Sculptures, and the Montrose County Sheriff’s Posse.
