By Kathryn R. Burke. Early to mid-October is the peak color season for Western Colorado high country. Join me on a photographic journey through the San Juans mountains. After more than 30 years of photographic it, I believe this is the most beautiful region in the United States.

The name literally means “to scare crows.” Scarecrows have been used by farmers to protect new seed and growing crops from birds—scare away the crows—and have been in existence for more than 3,000 years! The oldest reference dates back to the year 712, in a Japanese book featuring a scarecrow known as Kuebiko. Scarecrow also have a long history in literature and film, perhaps the most famous being the 1939 move, The Wizard of Oz, starring Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow. [Read more]

Oct 28 & 29. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow- A Staged Reading.
The story is set in 1790 in the countryside around the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town (historical Tarrytown, New York), in a secluded glen known as Sleepy Hollow, renowned for its ghosts and the haunting atmosphere. The “Legend” relates the tale of Ichabod Crane, a familiar character in history. [Info, Tickets]

October is also Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month and National Field Trip Month. the two kind of go together. It’s also National Roller Skating Month, but that’s better celebrated without taking a pet along.
