Just like the rest of the world, Magic Circle Players tried to navigate our business through a landscape riddled with unknowns regarding COVID-19. Remaining optimistic, and with an approved safety plan, we held auditions in May of 2020 for our scheduled September opening production of Disney Newsies, The Broadway Musical. After our production date was postponed indefinitely, one actor commented, “Even if we never get to perform this show, knowing that I get to come to rehearsal twice a week is worth it.” That is exactly why we moved forward and didn’t just close the doors. We believe in the power of live theatre. We know that hope is powerful. We’ve seen fear and anxiety diminish in the magic of creating theatre. We are learning that we can adapt and we are resilient. In the midst of multiple performance cancellations, changes, and delays, we asked our patrons to take a risk and invest in the future of our community theatre by renewing their memberships, and they did!

Throughout this unstable season, we somehow managed to continue weekly rehearsals for Newsies. This time has proven to be extraordinary in ways we couldn’t have predicted. Community theatre has a well-deserved reputation of creating bonds and friendships among cast and crew and connections with our audiences, but this year-long ordeal has actually been a gift to all of us working on this production. The bonds are inexpressibly tighter; the friendships are lifelong and profound. We’ll be forever grateful for this experience.

Inspired by a true story, Disney Newsies, the Broadway Musical  is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of “newsies,” in-turn-of-the-century New York City. When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right! With a million voices and a single dream, they change the world. So — jump aboard the news wagon, and take an uplifting and inspirational ride to the world of the newsies of New York. Opens May 7, and runs for 4 weekends with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, 7:30 pm performances on May 20 & May 27, and 2 pm matinees on Sundays, May 9, 16 & 23. Tickets may be purchased online at or at the Box Office.
